Background Kansasville is an unicorporated village within the Town of Dover. Much of Dover, in fact, has a
Kansasville mailing address as Kansasville does have its own post office. The
Betterment Committee was formed in 2006 by Patrick Haley while he was town supervisor #1. Its first task was to throw the
largest party in the history of Dover - "Kansasville's Sesquicentennial Hometown Picnic" - in order to commemorate
Kansasville's founding in 1856. The celebration has now become the annual "Hometown Picnic".
Purpose
The Dover-Kansasville Betterment
Committee is made up of anyone who wishes to help make the Town of Dover a better place to live. Projects undertaken by
Betterment Committee helps build community pride, spirit, identity and unity. Signs, banners and the logo contest increase
the community's aesthetic value and give it identity. Historical displays help citizens remember and appreciate the past
but at the same time build pride in Dover's progress. The picnic, Venetian boat parade and fireworks help unite the community.
Neighbors meet neighbors while together they celebrate life in the Town of Dover.
Today The Betterment Committee and a group of community volunteers continue
to stage the Hometown Picnic each August on the Saturday before Labor Day weekend. Located in Eagle Lake County Park, the
celebration includes historical displays, children's games, a petting zoo, free root beer floats, music, food and other
attractions. Following the picnic is a Venetian Boat Parade around Eagle Lake and fireworks over the lake, all organized
by Betterment Committee volunteers. Other Projects Other projects undertaken by the Betterment Committee are hanging decorative banners
on telephone poles in the main thoroughfares and maintaining historical display cases in the town hall. In 2008, the Betterment
Committee sponsored a logo contest to develop the Town of Dover's first-ever logo. A project in the works is designing and
erecting the community's first "Welcome to Dover-Kansasville" signs. Additionally, we host yearly picnic festivities
and Christmas tree lighting ceremony to show support and unity for our town! Funding While the Town of Dover supports the hometown
picnic financially, donations from residents and local businesses make all other projects possible.
